Paul Saunders
By successfully adding saxophones and flutes to his portfolio Paul has become one of the most versatile woodwind players on the London scene. Previous West End shows include: Billy Elliot, Guys and Dolls, Les Misérables, The Producers, Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Full Monty, My Fair Lady, Ghost, Chicago, Top Hat and many more… Paul’s current post is the clarinet chair on the West End production of Wicked, a post he has held since the show opened in 2006.
As the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s multi-instrumental consultant, Paul’s role is two- fold. Firstly, offering students the opportunity to learn secondary instruments thus equipping them with the best chance of employment in woodwind teaching posts and secondly, to prepare aspiring multi-instrumentalists to the current expectations of ‘doubling’ on West End orchestrations. Other music colleges he works for are The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Trinity Laban. Publications include ‘So you want to play in shows’ and ‘Triple threat’ that are both designed for the aspiring multi-instrumentalist to practice fast instrument changes simulating the theatre pit environment. Paul is a Vandoren UK artist and an endorsee for Legere sax reeds.
