David Ruff

David is a London-based flautist and multi-instrumentalist, celebrated for his versatility and artistry across orchestral, musical theatre, and recording settings. A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he holds both a Bmus (hons) and an Mmus in classical flute, with jazz saxophone as his second study.
As a highly sought-after freelance orchestral musician, David has performed with many of the UK’s most prestigious orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, London Concert Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet Sinfonia, and Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
David’s extensive musical theatre experience spans West End productions, international tours, and new musicals. He has held woodwind chairs in the Wizard of oz, Cinderella, Young Frankenstein, and Funny Girl, and has served as a trusted deputy in hit shows including Matilda, Frozen, Sister Act, Guys and Dolls, and Phantom of the Opera, among others. A true multi-instrumentalist, his pit work includes flute, piccolo, clarinet, and the full saxophone family—often performed interchangeably within a single show.
His talents also extend into the studio, where he has recorded for major film and television projects including Captain America: the Winter Soldier, La Bohème (finitetvfilms), and numerous audio network sessions.
Alongside his performing career, David is a dedicated educator. He currently teaches flute at Lochinver House School and serves as a long-time tutor with Music Makers summer orchestral courses across the UK. His teaching portfolio includes positions at respected London schools such as Glendower Prep and More House, where he has taught flute, clarinet, and saxophone to students of all levels.
