Nick Ellis

Described by bbc radio 3 as ‘Impish and gorgeous’, British musician, Nick’s clarinet playing has taken him across the world as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player – reflecting his diverse passions and talents in music. Following his studies at the Royal Academy of Music and the Sibelius academy of music in Helsinki, nick was awarded a Leverhulme chamber music fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music. He won first prize in the Royal Overseas League chamber music competition – subsequently performed debut concerts at London’s South Bank and Wigmore hall – and was awarded the position of artist-in-residence at the Purcell School of Music.

Nick has worked with orchestras at home including Britten Sinfonia, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra and the London Concertante. Further afield he has appeared as guest principal clarinet with the Maltaphilharmonic and the Kazakhstan Philharmonic Orchestra.nick is a founder member of the Symphony Orchestra of India and has been a valued member of the orchestra since its inception in 2006. His work with the SOI has seen him performing with some of the India’s greatest musicians including Zubin Mehta and Zakir Hussein. Nick’s work in India has been diverse, having performed with esteemed soprano, Patriciarosario at the opening concert of Mumbai’s iconic Royal Opera House. He has also performed at the Con Brio festival at mumbai’s NCPA and given educational workshops for Muktanga schools in Mumbai.

Not only a clarinettist, nick plays the bansuri and performed as a soloist at the NCPA, with Karl Jenkins, SOI and will work for the Royal Opera House next year as an on-stage soloist.one of nick’s passions is for chamber music, having worked with ensembles across Europe including, Chroma, the Nash ensemble, the Catrin Finch ensemble and the Danish Chamber Players. Nick’s own group, the Korros ensemble regularly performs across the UK and recently recorded an acclaimed album with Convivium records. No stranger to the world of commercial and popular music, nick regularly records at the major studios, Abbey Road, Air Lyndhurst. He has recorded and performed with Sir Elton John, Andrea Bocelli, Idina Menzel, Tubular Bells. Nick has performed often for television – shows such as Jonathan Ross, MTV unplugged, and he was the first bass clarinettist to perform in the 23 year history of the Jools Holland Show.
