Ruth grew up in North London and started learning the trombone at the age of nine, studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Junior Department. Ruth read Music at the University of York, studying trombone with Robert Burtenshaw and gaining First Class Honours in her undergraduate degree.

Ruth undertook postgraduate study in trombone at the Royal Academy of Music in London, under the tutelage of Denis Wick and Dudley Bright. She achieved a Distinction in her Postgraduate Diploma and was awarded the prestigious DipRAM for outstanding performance, alongside the Vice Principal’s Award. Ruth was a member of the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester for two years.

Ruth is much in demand both as a trombonist and as a teacher. She was recently appointed as Second Trombone with the English National Ballet Philharmonic and is the trombone teacher at The Purcell School for Young Musicians. Ruth enjoys a busy and varied freelance career, working regularly with many of the major London orchestras and chamber ensembles. Recent projects have included live broadcasts with the BBC Concert Orchestra, world premieres at Glyndebourne and with the London Sinfonietta, concert performances with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and innovative participatory projects with the City of London Sinfonia.

Alongside her performance commitments, Ruth is a highly experienced, dedicated, and passionate educator. In addition to her role at The Purcell School, she taught at the Royal College of Music Junior Department for ten years and has taken undergraduate and postgraduate performance classes and sat on adjudication panels at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Ruth also has a wealth of experience in teaching primary and secondary-age pupils, from complete beginners through to preparing students for conservatoire auditions. Many of Ruth’s pupils have gained places in national youth ensembles and have been awarded scholarships at the leading conservatoires.
